The Republic of Singapore is an island nation at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula in South-East Asia. Its population of nearly five and a half million form a diverse cross-section of cultures, with Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures representing the major groups. This brings plenty of diversity to Singapore, in terms of language, religion, heritage, and of course, our national obsession, food. A former British colony, English is the language of education, business and government, and many public areas have additional signs in Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. Although only 728 square kilometers in area and highly urbanized, Singapore has several relatively large nature reserves and other pockets of wildlife, and takes pride in infusing greenery throughout our 'City in Nature'.
